Mashburn
Betsy and Harry Mashburn
8 Northlake Road
The Mashburn name in synonymous with generosity and philanthropy in Columbia and many events supporting a long list of charities and other organizations take place in this impressive garden.
The graceful curve of the driveway is the first thing you’ll notice as you approach through the gates. The parking pads, added during the renovation, are like concrete mosaics framing the large circle of grass. No plants in this space will obscure the first view of this imposing home.
Walk around the left side of the house and you’ll discover a beautiful area that is the result of a storm which took down several large pines. Undaunted, Betsy and Harry created a lovely secluded spot that is a favorite view from inside the house. Magnolias and crape myrtles are the bones of this landscape and the display of azaleas in the spring is spectacular, especially when mirrored in the clear, spring-fed lake. The walkways to and along the water are shady and inviting. You may notice a stone child playing here and there, perhaps anticipating a fishing expedition on the lake. Several varieties of hydrangea and fern thrive here. Harry credits the little ecosystem to the cool breeze off the water.
The Mashburns built the Pennsylvania bluestone terrace which wraps the back of the house with wonderful little niches and hideaway spots. The base of the fountain is handpainted and the sound system will probably be filling the area with music. The willow trees that anchor the corners are only four years old….obviously they are happy here. Take a moment to appreciate the view down to and across the lake and if you’re inclined, peak through the window and see Betsy’s blue and white kitchen. (She won’t mind.)
You’ll encounter evidence that these energetic homeowners indeed have a plan for the future. A rose garden is the project just completed and work is underway to fill the reflecting pool constructed by the previous owner with a perfect mix of plants to complement the fig trees. The large circular garden will be home to perennials. Even the gardens above the back driveway walls are planted with roses and self-seeding poppies for textural interest.
You can see the successful combination of the viewpoint of Harry, the precise engineer and Betsy, the creative musician, in this beautiful place. Isn’t it nice when nice people have such a fitting place to come home to?
