Summer 2008 Newsletter
Columbia Green began some 24 years ago with a small group of volunteers who planted small lots and containers in underprivileged neighborhoods. They worked next to local residents without the aid of other organizations, and their results were often under appreciated and neglected in the following years.
These days, Columbia Green has aligned itself with a plethora of like-minded organizations. These affiliations create a web of impact across the Columbia area not only by strengthening our investments, but also by creating spin-offs that will further beautification efforts throughout the Midlands.
Our partnerships include:
- The City of Columbia with whom we dedicate more than $14,000 each year for annuals to maintain the amazing breadth of medians and rights-of-way we have landscaped throughout the area. Included in this are 7 major gateways to the city as well as more than a dozen main thoroughfares;
- Historic Columbia at both the Seibels Garden and the Robert Mills House;
- Columbia Museum of Art with its Boyd Street Quadrant as well as landscaping around the new Keenan Fountain and Apollo's Cascade sculpture;
- Parks and Recreation Department projects at Heathwood, Hollywood, Rose Hill, Martin Luther King and Memorial parks;
- Arbor Day plantings at a variety of public schools;
- Palmetto Health Children's Hospital which recently created a meditating garden;
- Richland County and Fort Jackson gateways to the U.S. Army installation;
- City of Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission with whom we co-sponsor the Columbia Choice Awards to recognize others who are making an effort to improve the city through landscaping; and
- A variety of local garden clubs and organizations that benefit from our Neighborhood Beautification grants.
We believe that working with other organizations strengthens our ability to reach out to many different areas of the city and allows us to do projects on a variety of levels. We look forward to creating more liaisons as we continue to grow and beautify the Columbia area. We hope to put your donations to work in a variety of ways that will reach out to all residents and visitors to the greater Columbia metropolitan area.
