Mayor Coble Proclaims 2009 as the Year of the Tree in Columbia

In recognition of Columbia Green's Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Tree Initiative gift of $25,000, Mayor Bob Coble will formally proclaim 2009 as the "Year of the Tree" at a Tree Planting Ceremony to be held at 11:00am Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Drew Wellness Center (Green Space/Park Area), located at 2101 Walker Solomon Way.  City Council members, Columbia Green board members, Tree and Appearance Commission members and representatives from the community will be in attendance for this special ceremony. "We are delighted to announce this designation and commend Columbia Green for all of the great contributions they have made over the last 25 years.  The City of Columbia has enjoyed a very beneficial partnership and we look forward to future endeavors,"  Mayor Bob Coble stated.

Coopers Nursery has generously donated the 30-gallon canopy tree to be planted at the Drew Wellness Center Park.

Columbia Green will award grants up to $2,500 annually over the next five years to plant canopy trees in areas throughout the city. Neighborhoods, individuals and community groups interested in adding canopy trees to their landscape can apply for a Tree Initiative Grant by downloading a grant application. Columbia Green will also be reaching out to Columbia area businesses to join efforts in expanding the Tree Initiative funds.

Councilwoman Belinda Gergel commented, "This new initiative by Columbia Green will be a defining step in sustaining our 21st century city for future generations.  We clearly will be a greener and more beautiful city and in the process will attract new business development and residents."

Columbia Green's Tree Initiative comes at a crucial time for Columbia since federal funding is at risk because of poor air quality levels.  Canopy trees can contribute to a sustainable environment by improving air quality, moderating climate, conserving water and harboring wildlife.  The Climate Protection Action Committee (CPAC), which provides measures to reduce emission levels of the City of Columbia, supports Columbia Green's Initiative.
