Tree Workshop a Success

Chris Freeman demonstrating tree planting techniques

Columbia Green members and guests heard tree care tips during a four-hour symposium at the Robert Mills House on Saturday, April 4th.  The symposium, co-sponsored by Columbia Green and Historic Columbia Foundation, was led by trained arborists from one of Columbia's leading tree care firms, Sox and Freeman.  The workshops were free to Columbia Green and Historic Columbia Foundation members while others paid a $15 entrance fee.

Three workshops provided information about tree planting, tree pruning and general tree healthcare. Sox and Freeman arborists demonstrated pruning techniques on the trees surrounding the Robert Mills House and planted both balled and burlap specimens as well as container trees on site. Chris Freeman demonstrated the planting techniques, Peter Herlan acted as the plant health care specialist while Blake Roddy ran the pruning workshop. The company donated all trees to the house museum grounds and also supplied the six-foot trees that were given to the forty seminar participants.

This educational seminar is part of Columbia Green's "Year of the Tree" initiative being held to celebrate its 25th anniversary.  Best known for our median and gateway plantings in the greater Columbia area, we have pledged to plant $25,000 worth of trees over the next five years for aesthetic and environmental reasons. Our goal is to enhance the Columbia area through landscaping, horticulture, education, and conservation.
